Program Description

Students in the Surgical Technology program apply their skills to become allied health professionals who deliver patient care in the surgical suite. Surgical technologists ensure the operating room environment is safe, the equipment functions properly, and the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. They assist surgeons and anticipate the needs of the patient and surgeon during surgical procedure. Surgical technologists are the surgical team’s experts in aseptic technique. After completing required classroom and lab hours, the student must complete a clinical externship in an operating room. Externships are generally unpaid unless the student is sponsored by a facility. Students completing this program are required to take the Tech in Surgery – TS-C (NCCT) Exam.

Admission Requirements

PRE-ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

This program is open to qualified adult students. In addition, students must meet the following program requirements:

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent (adult students only)
  • High school students must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA and successful completion of Math 2 (B or higher) and English 2 (B or higher). Student’s must have the minimum required grade for two quarters or one semester in the same school year.  Students may take the READING and MATH exam in lieu of meeting the GPA requirement
  • High school students must be in second semester of their senior year and be 18 years old on or before March 1st of the current school year
  • Contact/Meet Health Programs Advisor 
  • Complete the Davis Tech Placement Assessments
  • Complete a Program Application and be accepted into the Surgical Technology Program

Any misdemeanor or felony conviction on record may negatively impact your chances of being accepted into the program, being placed on an externship site, and obtaining employment in a healthcare setting. If you have a felony conviction within the last seven years or any type of drug conviction, you will not be accepted into the program.

POST-ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students accepted into the Surgical Technology Program, must meet the following requirements:

  • Take and pass a urine drug screen
  • Complete and pass a federal criminal background check
  • Complete a physical exam performed by a physician and provide documentation
  • Documentation of all required vaccinations
  • Documentation of current CPR certification
    • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (preferred). This course is offered through Davis Tech and ECOE
Admission Assessment Requirements

Transcripts for prior academic learning or assessments (such as college or high school), may waive some or all of the admission requirements. Copies should be emailed to Admissions@davistech.edu. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable in most cases. For applicants who do not have supporting documentation, please contact the Assessment Center to schedule an assessment.

To be considered for a potential assessment waiver:

  • High school applicants will have their high school transcript reviewed; in addition, they may also submit their ACT/SAT scores
  • Adult applicants may submit unofficial high school transcripts, if courses were taken in the last three years; unofficial college transcripts from a regionally accredited institution; or ACT/SAT scores, if taken within the last 5 years
  • Applicants with a Davis Tech Certificate of Completion at an equivalent level or higher
  • Applicants with an associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution may submit a copy of their unofficial transcript of conferred degree

Documentation must be uploaded for an assessment waiver with program application or can be emailed to admissions@davistech.edu for review.

Transfer Options

Following the completion of this Davis Tech program and after being admitted to the partner institution, your Davis Tech certificate of completion will be converted to as many as 30 credit hours toward an Associate of Applied Science at any Utah colleges and universities.
