Program Description

The goal of the Medical Assistant program is to prepare competent, entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. To achieve this goal, students will be trained in all aspects of medical office practice including administrative tasks and back office clinical tasks. Upon successful completion of all required courses, students will participate in a non-paid externship in a medical office. Graduates of the program will be eligible to take the Registered Medical Assistant Certification exam.

Admission Requirements

PRE-ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Secondary and post-secondary students may enroll in the Medical Assistant program. Students must meet the following program requirements:

  • If currently enrolled in high school, must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Adult students must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Students must be at least 17 years old to enroll into the Medical Assistant program, however, they must be 18 years old to begin their clinical rotations which take place at the end of the program.
  • Complete assessment requirements as noted below:

POST-ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Students accepted into the Medical Assistant program, must meet the following post-admission requirements:

  • Provide documentation of all required vaccinations
  • Take and pass a 10-panel urine drug screen
    • NOTE:The use of any non-federally regulated drug will result in a failed drug screen. The use of medical cannabis is not legal under federal law, and marijuana cards will not be recognized.
  • Complete and pass a federal criminal background check *

* Any misdemeanor or felony conviction on record may negatively impact the chances of completing the program, being placed on an externship site, applying for the Certified Medical Assistant credential and obtaining employment in a health care setting.

Admission Assessment Requirements

Transcripts for prior academic learning or assessments (such as college or high school), may waive some or all of the admission requirements. Copies should be emailed to Admissions@davistech.edu. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable in most cases. For applicants who do not have supporting documentation, please contact the Assessment Center to schedule an assessment.

To be considered for a potential assessment waiver:

  • High school applicants will have their high school transcript reviewed; in addition, they may also submit their ACT/SAT scores
  • Adult applicants may submit unofficial high school transcripts, if courses were taken in the last three years; unofficial college transcripts from a regionally accredited institution; or ACT/SAT scores, if taken within the last 3 years
  • Applicants with a Davis Tech Certificate of Completion at an equivalent level or higher
  • Applicants with an associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution may submit a copy of their unofficial transcript of conferred degree

Documentation must be uploaded for an assessment waiver with program application or can be emailed to admissions@davistech.edu for review.

Transfer Options

Following the completion of this Davis Tech program and after being admitted to the partner institution, your Davis Tech certificate of completion will be converted to as many as 30 credit hours toward an Associate of Applied Science at any Utah colleges and universities.
