Davis Technical College Names Gabrianna Rhodes Student of the Year

KAYSVILLE, Utah – Davis Technical College (Davis Tech) is proud to announce the selection of Welding Technology student Gabrianna Rhodes as the 2019 Davis Tech Student of the Year. The announcement was made at a luncheon on Dec. 12, 2019.
Rhodes decided a technical education was the right choice for her after she took a class that compared and contrasted traditional four-year universities, community college and technical education. When Rhodes chose Welding Technology as her program, she knew it was the right place for her, even if she appeared slightly out of place.
“On the first day of class my teachers admitted to me that they thought I had come to the wrong room and that’s ok because I enjoy exceeding expectations and it’s fun for me to surpass typical female stereotypes,” said Rhodes.
Rhodes has excelled in the program and shares her skills and tips with other students. Her instructors are consistently impressed with her work ethic and leadership abilities.
“Gabby is an example of what a strong, smart woman can be in a field largely dominated by men. She has a strong drive for success, and I can’t wait to see what she accomplishes after she graduates from our program,” said Scott Quealy, Welding Technology program instructor.
Rhodes was awarded a $1,000 prize and a $1,500 scholarship. In 2020 Rhodes will represent Davis Tech and be an ambassador for technical education.
Master Esthetics student Margaret Carson is the runner-up and was awarded a $750 prize and a $1,000 scholarship. The three remaining finalists are Esthetics student Melissa Meldrum, Welding Technology student Colton Smith and Practical Nurse student Amy Hanges. Each of the three finalists were awarded a $500 prize and a $500 scholarship.
