Davis Technical College Names Bailey Hamblin 2021 Student of the Year

KAYSVILLE, Utah: Davis Technical College (Davis Tech) is proud to announce Surgical Technology student Bailey Hamblin as the 2021 Davis Tech Student of the Year. Hamblin was announced at a live broadcast on Dec. 2, 2020, and will serve in this role throughout 2021.

Hamblin decided a technical education was the right choice for her after a near-tragic car accident that she was lucky to live through. Inspired by the first responders and the hospital emergency room staff who saved her life, Hamblin knew she wanted a career working in an intensive care unit (ICU). Hamblin chose Davis Tech’s Surgical Tech program to gain hands-on training for her dream career as a surgical technician.

“I have worked difficult, long hours to pursue a technical education and am proud of the success I have had,” said Hamblin. “It did not come easy; there were many tears, late nights, and doubts about whether or not I could do it. I hope to be an inspiration to students that you can do it!”

Hamblin’s instructors have no doubt she will be successful as a surgical technician, also known as a scrub tech.

“Bailey has excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills," said Leah Garrick, Surgical Technology program instructor. "She maintains a calm demeanor during stressful situations and is a positive mentor for her classmates. We will be sending her to our most prestigious operating rooms for her clinical externship.”

Davis Tech awarded Hamblin a $1,000 prize and a $1,000 scholarship. In 2021 she will represent Davis Tech and be an ambassador for technical education through public speaking and outreach events.

Welding Technology student Kamryn Price is the runner-up and was awarded a $750 prize and a $750 scholarship. The three remaining finalists are Cybersecurity student Nicholas Labrum, Pharmacy Technician student Tiffany Skelton, and Plumbing Apprentice student Gladys Wood. Davis Tech awarded each of the three finalists a $500 prize and a $500 scholarship.
