Davis Technical College honored its Practical Nurse program graduates with a drive-in pinning ceremony on Friday, May 1 at 6:00 p.m. in the north lot on Simmons Way on the main campus.
Davis Tech and its Practical Nurse program instructors wanted to celebrate the graduating nurses, while following safety precautions and Center for Disease Control guidelines. Graduates and guests attended the ceremony from within their vehicles, as well as via webcast. Attendees parked their vehicles and stayed safely inside during most of the ceremony. When a graduate’s name was called, they stepped from the vehicle and a family member or friend from the same vehicle will presented the pin, then returned to their vehicle.
Practical Nurse program instructor Rachel Walker worked hard on this ceremony to ensure her students were recognized for their accomplishments. “Our students have worked so hard to finish their LPN year during quarantine and we just had to celebrate all they have accomplished,” said Walker. “This is the only pinning ceremony they will get, we had to make it happen.”
The gravity and importance of a graduating class of nurses during a pandemic is not lost on Jodie Buttars, coordinator for the Practical Nurse program. “I have seen so many of our past students working the front lines during this pandemic and I couldn’t be prouder of them,” said Buttars. “These graduates are ready to join them in the nursing workforce and make a difference in the lives of others.”
